The huge walkouts, student
strikes, marches, and rallies on March 4, 2010, in defense of public education
were historic. March 4 was likely the largest coordinated action in defense of
public education and social services in our nation's history — and it was the
first coordinated mass response to the economic crisis that has rocked the
country since late 2007.

The
Obama healthcare reform is NOT good for working people. In fact it
marks a big step in the wrong direction. And the main reason for this
is that it's a plan based on the very private insurance companies that
have created the healthcare fiasco we face today in our country.

All day Friday I was swamped with
reports from across California and nationwide about the actions that
took place on March 4 in defense of public education and social
services. Some of them made the mainstream press -- the huge rally at UC San Diego campus
rally of 3,000, followed by a march in downtown San Diego of 5,000
people, or the various marches in San Francisco and the East Bay of Northern
California.

Obama and the politicians in Washington won't listen to our
admonitions and demands unless they are forced to do so by hundreds of
thousands of people in the streets. We need to make heard the voice of the
millions of people who voted for Obama and gave him a mandate for REAL CHANGE.

On Nov. 4, 2008, there were torrents of tears of joy from the
millions of Black people who had never voted. There were tears of joy
from the millions of workers who remembered Obama's promise to enact
real healthcare reform, jobs programs, and the Employee Free Choice
Act -- and from the activists who remembered his pledge that the war
would end and that there would be jobs, justice, and peace for
all. What is the situation one year later?
